There are a range of jobs available on the farm, some requiring more physical strength than others. If you are thinking about applying, take a look at some of the jobs below to see which ones you think you might be suited to.

Stringing

Stringers attach twine between 2 banana plants to assist in keeping the banana plant vertical when the banana bunches become too heavy for the plant.

Requirements: This job doesn't require a lot of muscle but a good level of fitness as it involves approximately 8 hours of walking a day!

Deleafing

Deleafers use a knife to remove any leaves close to the banana bunch to ensure they do not rub.

Requirements: This job does not require a lot of muscle power but a good level of fitness as it involves approximately 8 hours of walking a day!


Irrigation

These people walk through the field and check sprinklers for blockages.

Requirements: This job does not require a lot of muscle power but a good level of fitness as it involves approximately 8 hours of walking a day!

Humpers

Humpers cut the banana bunch from the tree and carry them to a trailer. Bunches can weigh up to 80kgs making "humping" one of the most strenuous jobs on the farm.

Your first week will be hell, every inch of your body will be in some sort of pain. But after a week your body becomes accustomed to the hard physical work. You'll start feeling a little more normal and start developing biceps!

Requirements: Good level of fitness and endurance

Desuckerers

Desuckerers remove small banana plants from around the main tree using a small spade. Again, this is not a job for the faint hearted and requires a great deal of strength and a good level of fitness.

Baggers

Baggers place bags over the banana bunches in the field using a cherry picking machine. A very important job, correct bagging ensures bananas have minimal insect and sun damage and top quality fruit.

Requirements: Good level of fitness and strength and good driving and operating skills.

Bell-injectors

Bell injectors inject a mixture into the bell of the banana bunch to control thrips.

Requirements: A good eye – you need to see the maroon bell in the mass of green leaves...unfortunately this is not a job for you if you're colour blind! A medium level of fitness

Packing Shed

There are numerous jobs in the shed. The guys normally work in the stacking, dehanding or hanging areas and the girls work in the packing, clustering, sorting and weighing areas.

Requirements: Ability to work in a team
